After reading and loving Carolina Man, book three in the Dare Island series, I considered it a necessity to go back to the beginning. Each book can technically be read as a standalone, but knowing that several threads connect across the books-and knowing that I could find more of what made Carolina Man so special- I had to have more.Carolina Home is where the Fletcher family's story begins. Matt Fletcher is a charter boat captain, a devoted son and single father to a teenage son, Josh. When his wife left him and their newborn son all those years ago, Matt vowed to never be open to that sort of heartbreak again. With Matt, Kantra delivers a exceedingly worthy hero. Matt's dedication to his son and their family, his willingness to always be there when needed, had me firmly on his side from the opening. To see that kind of selflessness and resolve to protect his and his son's heart was understandable and sad.
Literature teacher Allison Carter is new to Dare Island, and determined to make her mark. She initially meets with Matt over concerns for his son's education, but the two quickly make a connection. At only twenty-five, Allison is who I want to be when I grow up. Having been raised in a privileged life, she is dedicated to helping others, particularly those not as fortunate as she, and in education. While Matt questions her longevity on Dare Island, and in a relationship, Allison knows her own mind. His being a single father does not scare her off, nor does his tight-knit family. In fact, what Matt is afraid will scare Allison away are the very parts that pull her in even closer.
If you've picked up on my affection for these two, then I'm sure you can guess how much I enjoyed their love story. Allison and Matt come from two very different backgrounds. Matt is thirty-six year old single father, she is twenty-five and searching for a true home. Matt has abandonment issues and is determined not to saddle her down with a life she's not prepared for. Allison will prove to Matt that she is ready for it all.
What is really cool about this series is while you do have lead characters, the entire Fletcher family plays a large part of the overall picture. And while the cast is large and various points of view are included, the narrative never becomes confusing or cluttered. I enjoyed every single perspective and thread, especially Taylor's (her story comes to a head in Carolina Man).
Carolina Home was such an enjoyable story. I am thrilled that I gave this series the time it deserves.
Favorite Quotes:
I love you.
The realization loomed inside her, solid as a rock sticking out of the ocean, staggering in its simplicity.
She loved him. Loved his quiet steadiness, his uncomplicated directness, his commitment to family, his determination to do the right thing. Loved Matt, the whole man.
She was as full of contrasts as the sea, the bright surface and cool depths. Every time he thought he had her figured, she surprised him. Like that tattoo she wore, waiting to be discovered under her pastel cardigans. She stirred him up, he admitted...He was drawn to her warmth, challenged by her determination to embrace life, to try things out, to take things on, to put herself out there. To be naked, in every way.

Carolina Home A Dare Island Novel Virginia Kantra 9780425250938 Books Reviews
"Carolina Home" is one of the most touching love stories I've ever read. In addition to the (very satisfying!) main love story between hunky single-dad Matt Fletcher (*sigh*) and intrepid newbie schoolteacher Allison, there's Matt's parents' decades-long, still-strong romance; the masculine, just-us-guys affection between Matt and his teenage son; and the slow melting of Matt's newfound niece Taylor, a wary ten-year-old who can't quite believe the tight-knit Fletchers have enough love to spare for her (they do, and then some). Virginia Kantra sweetly captures the everyday challenges and joys that real life is made of--and if you don't cry during one short, spare yet incredibly poignant scene between Matt's parents, then you shouldn't be reading romance novels!
I loved this story, not just because it was set in North Carolina, my home, but because it was a real romance, and not just an excuse to write sex scenes. The hero, Matt, and the heroine, Allison, both discovered things about themselves so that they could make their romance grow. It is part of a series, but is a stand alone story. Also, some fairly explicit sexual scenes are in the book, for those people who like to know, along with some language, but not much, that might bother some readers.
Pulled me in right away and reminded me why I love a good love story. I love the characters and the depth into family connections. After reading this book, I read the entire series and it was wonderful! I want to live on Dare Island!
Incredible story of love and family. Ms. Kantra captures the essence of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The scenic backdrop is the perfect place for the first book in her new series about the Fletchers.
Allison is the sweet heroine whose got sass and a whole lot of heart. The school teacher is a new comer to the tight-knit community of Dare Island. She's barely arrived when she meets the sexy hero, Matt Fletcher, a single dad and a local waterman.
The chemistry between the two is exciting and sexy.
But the story is Ms. Kantra weaves is more than just a boy-meets-girl love story. The close Fletcher family shows the bonds of love between parents and children, siblings, and unexpected relations.
You'll barely finish this book before you're begging to read the sequel, CAROLINA GIRL.
An excellent story about a loving family and events that took place in their past that affects their desires for the future. Story is somewhat centered around Matt (a charter boat captain) and Allison (new school teacher to the beach area), but also other family members. Excellent characters, good story plot and excellent author. This was the first time I had read any of Virginia's books, but I will be buying more.
I'm a new fan of this author and I'm going through her older books one by one. I loved this first book in the Dare Island series about the Fletcher family. Here we have the older, jaded H up against the lovely, much younger h. The H has a 16 year old son by his ex-wife, whom he has single-handedly brought up because his ex deserted him when the son was just a baby. The h is the son's teacher, who confronts the H when she feels that the son is not living up to his potential. It's just such a lovely story and the h is one of the nicest characters I've read about in ages. The son is unexpectedly gorgeous and so nice to read about throughout the series. I'm hooked on this series!
The writing was so good I could smell and see the ocean in the imagery within the first two pages. Characters felt real, and although there was closure for Matt and Allison, there are story threads left for future books. Nice local touches, like shopping at Belk.
My only complaint was Tom's insult to the ex-Navy corpsman, as these "Docs" are embedded in Marine units. Didn't feel right.
Looking forward to reading the entire series.
