Barbara Billig has done it again! Now successfully successfully established as a excellent author, who knows how to keep a novel from bogging down, Billig moves to the Far East and aims her keyboard at the failure of the Fukushima Japan Nuclear Power Plant failure.

It's easy for banality and cliché to slip into works on topics like nuclear power plant failures because, let's face it, it isn't the world's most scintillating topic. Many authors seem to have libraries of their own archetypical characters and the tired dialogue and/or plotting that follows so that when “The End” appears, we have another run-of-the-mill “end of the world”-style work, some of whose characters would seem to run around waving their hands shouting "the end is coming...what should we do?" However, "Betrayal" is a work whose characters are real and who do not intone some piece of hackneyed, trite dialogue as they try to keep “the big one from getting bigger.” In our reading we've notices that character libraries include:

-- The humanist engineer/hero, whose concern for humanity touching as is his obvious incorruptibility (he rejects offers in the millions if he will just walk away).

-- The computer geek, whose only known value in the story is to explain things that only a computer geek would know or care about. He and our hero solve the problem just in the nick of time. (Why waste a perfectly good character who only speak geekinese?).

-- (Author's note: With apologies to our women readers, no denigration is intended here, we are using a term that is not used much today but which does hit the character type exactly, thank you.) The ingenue/heroine/engineer – enough said about that.

-- The bad guy who has an epiphany as the walls implode around him and he finally realizes the error of his ways.

Billig has proven she can write a disaster work that keeps moving with great pacing and plot development while steering clear of the banalities and cliches that litter the work of other authors. In her first major work in this genre, the nuclear meltdown, “The Nuclear Catastrophe” illustrates what can happen when warnings aren't heeded and when corners are cut and building sites aren't chosen properly.

In “Betrayal,” the action moves to the Far East and the earthquake that caused the failure of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. It's a serious issue and the UN gets involved. They commission a major US company to look into the failure and issue a report. But, will they let the report go through? And, what major interests are afraid of what they will find?

We'll let you find all of that yourself as you read Billig's latest work. We will tell you that she has matured as an author and her characters and characterization are much stronger and more natural. They seem real and their actions seem real, too.

Indeed, her writing style has improved. We were happy we could review the follow-on to her last major work. Not only does it hold a warning for the world about a topic people don't want to discuss, but the way she has carried it off shows her maturity as a writer.

There are authors out there whose works have you snoring within the first 20 pages. Barbara Billig's work will have you up reading late at night and at the dinner table. "Betrayal" really shows how far she's come.

#Betrayal A fiction novel of survival Nuclear Fiction Volume 2 Barbara C Billig 9781496081223 Books Reviews

I know the author well. She put in several years writing this book. Some of the incidents in the book are based on truth as she interviewed me about them. Particularly interesting to her was the story I told about entering an electrical junction box for inspection in Los Angeles. She has a character named Bryce Anderson in the novel experience this same extremely dangerous situation. Also the motorcycles scenes were derived from interviews with me. So she has worked both a feminine and masculine viewpoint into the story while imparting some important information about the aftermath of a nuclear disaster.
Whether you like this book, more than any other I have seen, will depend on what you expect from a book. For me, Barbara Billig let herself down, but others may not see it this way. The story has several threads and in principle could be material for several novels. They are all well-written, except for the occasional bout of a sequence of sentences that may be too short, but the different components do not seem to mesh, and they tend to fade away rather than be resolved. The author is clearly against nuclear power, which is fine as a message, but unfortunately the author sometimes takes to the pulpit. For me, I hope for "Show, don't preach!"

The threads include Sara with a brain tumour, and she is to undergo a radical treatment. That thread is abandoned, and we meet Elise who is undergoing continual cosmetic surgery, another thread starts a description of the problems of dog training, and these threads finally get around to a fund-raising dinner for the victims of Fukushima. All of these are very well-written, but for me the story lacked coherence. Also, none of the threads really finish in that nothing is resolved.

Then about the middle of the book, the story focuses on Bryce and Katheryn, who are sent to assess what happened at Fukushima. It turns out there was incompetence on a dazzling scale (I rather suspect this is true) but there is a lot of money to be lost unless this is seen as an unfortunate act of God, and a lot of that money came from the Yakuza, who are not particularly well-disposed to losing more. The report has to be stopped, and what better way than to stop the writers? (Actually, there are better ways, but that is not the point.) This triggers a section where Barbara Billig tries her hand as a thriller writer, and in this section, for me she pushed all the right buttons. It is credible, and she avoids the usual trap of having the hero do superhuman things and have extraordinary doses of dumb luck. Instead, she relies on people being aware of what is going on, and taking appropriate action. The thriller part is worth five stars, although again, it fades out.

I originally gave this three stars because of the proof reading but the author has informed me, through the comments below, that this was a compiling error, and on the understanding that this is fixed, I am now deleting the comments on proof reading. As a final comment, if the author can focus her stories and bring them to a climax, she should become an extremely good writer, easily worth five stars.
The first book was about the catastrophic events that might befall nations when a nuclear power plants goes belly up. Now in "Betrayal" you get insights into several different lives as the world tries to deal with the aftermath of those events.

Sara has a brain tumor, Elise has to have continual cosmetic surgery and there is even a nod to how the animals and plants have adapted to the radiation.

The main thrust of the book is the problems the hero, Bryce Adams, encounters as he tries to conduct an independent study in Japan. Corruption, greed and lies are what he has to overcome to get at the truth. Overall a very good book.
I enjoyed Betrayal and recommended it for my book club to read. It was a fast read since I wanted to see how the events unfolded. I found the male characters to be more interesting than the female ones. However, I wanted to see what happened to all of them on their journey. I understand some of these characters will be part of another book in the making and will look forward to it. This is an educational, well written book which is based on the reality of nuclear threats.
