The plot was good and it did keep you wondering how it would finish, but I just found it too soft.
One minute in the beginning of the book her OCD and fears are so bad she is caging her and her son in. And the next she simply doesn't lock it. Same as so many of her other symptoms, she just finds her self not doing the things she used to after one evening, or one afternoon. OCD is not that simple to cure, just by finding a guy who tells you not think about it and you find yourself able to go ahead with whatever he suggests just by him cajoling you.
Although the elements are good, its not a realistic portrayal of the recovery of someone with PTSD coupled with OCD; which for me really let it down.
The Edge of Darkness for me is a far grittier tale on this subject.

Under a dark cloud .... jinxed ..... cursed ..... unlucky. We have all heard these expressions, may have even experienced one or two along the way.

Kate Parker has been living .. or afraid of living ... for many years. Her parents died in a car accident on the day of her wedding. A few years later, her husband was murdered by a home invasion gang. Her house has been broken into ... twice. She feels like she's losing her mind and what's worse, she's making a nervous wreck of her young son.

There is so much to this story. The author does a great job presenting the psychological aspects. Kate meets a man who helps her get past her fears, but for someone so afraid of absolutely everything, it was hard to imagine that she would trust a stranger as much as she does.

Jago is a mystery himself. Is this meeting an accident ... coincidence ..... or is there something more sinister at work? Again, the author created a character that came to life under her pen.

All the tension seemed to come very close to the end, and then it felt very rushed. The actual ending was somewhat of a letdown.
This was an okay read to me ... I did want to keep reading to see what happened next .. I knew something was coming ... just not what.

Genre Psychological Thriller

Cover Art Just Ok. I have the cover of the woman running through the woods. There is an alternate cover that displays a woman in a red coat with her hair across her face. I prefer the latter. Both are pretty middle of the road as far as covers go.

Review Again, just Ok....I do like the title of this book- Accidents Happen. It reflects the life of the main character, Kate Parker, that we meet as the book opens. I initially found Kate to be a unique character and I was expecting big things from her. I liked that she was a flawed character with pretty severe OCD (obsessive/compulsive disorder) issues. Her constant obsession with accident statistics was believable given her background. However, the author, Louise Millar lost me when Kate meets Jaco and becomes entirely too trusting and easily manipulated by this man.

I had some trouble with the pacing of this book. The plot was off to a good start and then it seemed to slow down about the time Kate starts to conquer her OCD. Although, her recovery seemed to be too fast. In comparison, the ending seemed too abrupt. The writing flowed along well and I didn't find it to be distracting as I read.

Bottom Line This an easy read beach bag book. While it certainly didn't keep me awake at night, it is still a book worth reading-it's just not one that will stick with you after you finish reading it. I think Millar is a "writer to watch" and I look forward to her next offering.

Accidents Happen is a bone-chilling look at what can happen when phobias not only take over your life, but also what happens when they cause those around you to dismiss valid concerns. Louise Millar has written a book that deals with an overwhelming obsession with statistics based on valid reasoning.

Kate Parker has had a rough life. Those close to her have passed away and now, on top of it all, strange things are happening around her and no one will listen to her concerns. On top of all of this, her husband's family is becoming more and more concerned and threatening to do something that will change Kate's life forever. So, when you have a valid, psychological issue and you are faced with opposition on all sides, what should you do?

I really connected with this book, and in particular, with Kate. I deal with some pretty strange phobias and could completely understand her fascination (although I'm not quite as bad as she was) with safety statistics and the need to be careful in life because yes, accidents happen. Although I would not have gone nearly as far as Kate goes, the underlying principle is the same - when it comes to your own safety, and that of your child's, sometimes it's right to listen to your instincts.

I enjoyed seeing Kate move from the defensive part of her phobias into taking more charge of her life. I thought the progression was healthy, but the manner through it was attained really bugged me. It wasn't until I was nearly done with the book that everything started to click and I began to understand the sneakiness of Louise Millar. She put a twist where I had no expectation of one!

I would very much recommend this book, but not if you have a fear of thinks that may live in your closets. If you do, then stay away - otherwise, read, enjoy, and sympathize with Kate. I know I did.
